News – Brand New Sega Magazine Mega Visions Hits Kickstarter Goal

Back in the 80s and 90s, magazines such as Nintendo Power were like a gamer’s bible. A primary source of information for all things gaming. Nowadays however these are few and far between, as more and more gaming journalism moves online.

Nevertheless, there are a few who are trying to keep the art of gaming magazines alive. One of these is Mega Visions. A brand new digital magazine dedicated to all things Sega both new, and most importantly, old. One which has very recently been successfully backed on Kickstarter.

Mega Visions Does

Created by the team over at Sega Nerds, Mega Visions will be a bi-monthly, fully digital publication filled to the brim with various features, reviews, and in-depth analysis. This be written by highly experienced journalists and industry experts, all of which will be led by Sega Nerds founder Chris Powell.  In fact, saying Mega Visions has industry experts on board really is an understatement.

You see, that’s because helping to write some of these retro features, reviews and analysis, include none other than:

  • Blake Harris (Features Writer) – Author of Console Wars
  • Tom Kalinske (Columnist) – Former President of Sega of America
  • Al Nilsen (Columnist) – Former Marketing Director of SEGA of America
  • Randy Nelson (Columnist) – Founding Editor of IGN

All in all, this means that readers should definitely expect some juicy nuggets of information concerning both the history of Sega and its games. This should be especially true of  Tom Kalinske’s columns. In fact, Mega Visions’ Kickstarter page promises that a great deal of this content could well be being revealed for the first time ever.

Draft cover for Issue 1 which is set to launch later this year.

Having raised $13,000 in order to make this dream a reality, the Mega Visions project proves there’s still a desire not only for old school gaming, but also for old school gaming journalism and reporting. Albeit one with a modern digital interactive twist. Even better though, anyone interested in Mega Visions can grab their tablet and download the App right now and read the sneak preview issue 0 immediately.

The Console Wars In Magazine Form

What’s more, this desire for magazine based gaming journalism isn’t isolated to Mega Visions, NF Magazine is another perfect example. Created by many formers writers from the legendary Nintendo Power, NF Magazine was launched in 2013 in order cover all things Nintendo via magazine journalism. Unlike Mega Visions though, Nintendo Force’s NF Magazine is funded via Patreon.

As such, both of these prove that there is still a healthy appetite not only for gaming magazines, but also for in depth retro coverage (just like you can find here at Rings & Coins – plug, plug). In many ways having a Sega and Nintendo magazine to choose from kind of feels like returning to the golden days of the Console Wars. And this can’t be a bad thing.

Either way though, Rings & Coins would like to say a huge congratulations to Sega Nerds. I look forward to sitting down with a copy of Mega Visions issue 1 soon.

Unfortunately I was slightly too late, doesn’t mean I won’t be grabbing subscription though. Already have the app downloaded and ready :D. Looks like a fantastic magazine so can’t wait to read it.
