News – Streets of Rage 4 Announced

It’s a day that many a retro gamer thought would never come. Yes that’s right, you’re eyes aren’t deceiving you, as today a fourth instalment in the legendary 16-bit Streets of Rage series (Bare Knuckle in Japan) was revealed in a surprise announcement. Potentially just as interesting, is the fact that this announcement came not by way of SEGA, but instead by new publisher DotEmu.

Whilst not revealing any platforms or a release date, this first look at Streets of Rage 4 did include a fair bit of interesting information. Firstly, the fact that much like Sonic Mania, the game’s development will be a cross-production. This time consisting of by Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake developer Lizardcube, Streets of Fury developer Guard Crush Games, and finally Wonder Boy and Windjammers publisher DotEmu, who have officially licensed the franchise from original developer SEGA.

On top of this there’s also a brand new trailer that can be seen above. This trailer not only shows off Lizardcube’s gorgeous hard drawn visuals, but also the fact the Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding once again return. There’s also a few hints towards what might be in store for Axel and Blaze, alongside glimpses of some brand new game mechanics too.

DotEmu aren’t giving away much about Streets of Rage 4, and there are many questions left to answer, such as when will the game be out, for what platforms, who will be creating the soundtrack, and will there be more characters and online multiplayer? Nevertheless, this is already more than enough to keep us here at Rings & Coins on the edge of our seats impatiently waiting to learn more. After nearly 24 years, it’s so very nearly time to return to the legendary Streets of Rage.
