News – Super Star Wars Returns

As Star Wars fever begins to grip the entire world, one classic 16-bit title is getting a most welcome return.  Originally released for the Super Nintendo back in 1992, Super Star Wars recounts the story of Star Wars: A New Hope, and does it very well.  Featuring solid gameplay, and both a variety of characters and settings from the film amongst many other things it certainly is a memorable title in Nintendo’s 16-bit back catalogue.

However, whilst Nintendo has quite the sturdy platform in the Virtual Console, this classic side-scrolling run and gunner, will actually be returning via the PlayStation.  A brand that was yet to be invented when the Super Star Wars was first released.

Revealed earlier today via the PlayStation Blog as coming to the PS4 and Vita, Super Star Wars will also feature a selection of upgrades.  Additionally, this re-release will also be available via the cross-play feature, meaning that anyone who buys the guy on one platform, will receive it for free on the other.  No pricing details were announced in the blog post, but we won’t have long to wait, as the game will arrive on the North American PSN later this week.  Here’s the PlayStation Blog’s announcement:

Enhanced for PS4 with new save features, leaderboards, Trophies, and updated display and controller options. Risk your life as a Jedi Knight! Join Luke, Han, and Chewbacca in their fierce war against the evil Empire.

Remember though, anyone who wants to play any of the Super Star Wars trilogy, can also still grab them via Nintendo’s Virtual Console.  With these available on the Wii for 800 points.  This of course also means this classic trilogy is available on the Wii U by navigating the console into Wii mode.

Or alternatively you can just do what us here at Rings & Coins are doing and get out the original Super Nintendo and cartridge.  In fact, we’ll be bringing you reviews of all three games in this classic trilogy as we close in on Episode VII’s cinematic release.  In the meantime though, if you’re taking on the challenge of Super Star Wars, then “May The Force Be With You”.
